Sony patents gamepad with touchscreen for button layout selection
Sony has been granted a US patent for a gamepad with a touchscreen that allows players to choose the layout of buttons. The application was submitted back in February 2023, but the document was issued only at the end of January 2026, reports VGC.
The majority of the upper panel of the controller is intended to be occupied by the touchscreen, which will allow users to customize the layout of all controls — including virtual sticks and D-Pad. According to the patent, the system will also allow for resizing buttons and removing them completely if necessary.
The patent notes that existing controllers are not convenient for all users, and a fixed configuration may be a drawback. A touchscreen gamepad will address this issue for specific players.
The patent also mentions pressure and surface temperature sensors — presumably needed for accurate recognition of presses and distinguishing them from accidental touches.
However, the existence of the document does not indicate that the company is actually working on such a device, so it should not be viewed as a hint towards a future product.
