Brax unveils open_slate — a tablet with physical power, camera, microphone, and wireless communication shutdown

Brax Technologies has introduced the open_slate tablet on Indiegogo, featuring physical power, camera, microphone, and wireless module shutdowns. The device runs on Android or Linux, depending on user choice. Prices start at $600.

The open_slate is marketed as a "private 2-in-1 device" that can function as a tablet and transform into a computer when a keyboard and mouse are connected. The gadget is built on the MediaTek Genio 720 chip. Users can choose between 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of SSD storage.

The image is displayed on a 12-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2.4K and a 90Hz refresh rate. The Pro version features a 2.8K OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The device is powered by a 8000 mAh battery. Interfaces include two USB-C 2.0 ports, two USB-C 3.0 ports (one of them with DisplayPort 1.4), a USB-A 2.0 port, Micro HDMI, and an audio jack. The rear side has an M.2 slot for an additional SSD or 5G modem.

The main feature of the open_slate is the switches on one edge, which physically disconnect the cameras, microphones, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Additionally, the device is designed with a modular architecture for easier repairs, and the battery is removable.

The tablet runs on either Android or Linux. The proprietary BraxOS, based on Android, includes a private app store, tracker disabling, and tools for analyzing network traffic.

Currently, the developers are raising funds on Indiegogo to start production. The base version (8+128 GB / IPS) will cost $600, and the Pro version (12+128 GB / OLED) will be $800. Deliveries will begin in the fall of 2026.
